During the German occupation of France, Edmond Batignole (Gérard Jugnot) quietly operates a butcher shop, refusing to participate in politics. His daughter is engaged to Pierre-Jean Lamour (Jean-Paul Rouve), a Nazi-collaborator playwright. A Jewish child, Simon (Jules Sitruk) comes to Edmond's doorstep and asks for asylum after police arrest his family. He agrees to hide the boy from the authorities. Eventually, more children join Simon, and Edmond must take drastic action to protect them.
